The Battle of Saraighat was one of the greatest battles in Assam’s history. It was fought in 1671 between the Ahom Kingdom and the Mughal Empire on the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati. The battle is famous for the brave leadership of Lachit Borphukan, who defeated the much larger Mughal army.

Background of the Battle
In 1667, the Ahoms captured Guwahati from the Mughals. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb wanted to take Guwahati back. He sent Raja Ram Singh I of Amber with a large army to attack Assam.
Before this battle, the Ahoms had suffered a heavy loss in the Battle of Alaboi (1669). After learning from that defeat, Lachit Borphukan decided not to fight on open land. Instead, he planned to fight on the Brahmaputra River, where the Ahoms had a better chance of winning.

Lachit Borphukan was the commander of the Ahom army.
Although he became seriously ill during the battle, he did not give up. He personally led the final attack and encouraged his soldiers to fight bravely. His courage inspired the Ahom army, and they defeated the Mughal forces.
Because of his bravery, Lachit Borphukan is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of Assam.
