Regulating Act of 1773
The Regulating Act of 1773 was officially known as the East India Act of 1773. The Parliament of Great Britain passed the Regulating Act of 1773 to overhaul the East India Company’s rule and management in India. It was mainly introduced to bring reforms in the governance.
Key Features
- Governor of Bengal: Lord Warren Hastings became the first Governor-General of Bengal.
- Executive Council: Created an Executive Council of 4 members to assist the Governor-General of Bengal.
- Subordination of Presidencies: Made the Governors of Bombay and Madras Presidencies subordinate to the Governor-General of Bengal.
- Private Trade Restriction: Prohibited Company servants from engaging in any private trade.
Judicial Establishment
- Supreme Court of Calcutta (1774):
- Established at Fort William, Calcutta.
- Composition:
- 1 Chief Justice (Sir Elijah Impey)
- 3 Puisne (Lower) Judges
- Jurisdiction:
- Covered all British subjects and Company servants in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
